IPMI in Kenya: What to Compare Before You Buy

August 15, 2026 HEALTH INSURANCE IN KENYA, IPMI KENYA

Compare IPMI plans in Kenya for international medical cover.

To compare IPMI plans in Kenya properly, check eight things: geographical area, hospital access and direct settlement, deductibles, underwriting terms, benefit limits, evacuation, repatriation, and who services the policy.

Compare premiums only after every quotation uses the same insured members, country of residence, area of cover and excess.

The premium becomes meaningful after those differences are visible. Compare every quotation on the same assumptions: who is covered, where they live and seek treatment, hospital access, your financial exposure and the insurer’s final terms.

If you are still deciding whether IPMI is appropriate, begin with our complete guide to international health insurance in Kenya. This article is for choosing between quotations.

1. Start with the life the policy must support

Before comparing benefits, define:

  1. Where each member lives, works or studies.
  2. Where you would seek planned treatment.
  3. Preferred hospitals or specialists.
  4. Medical conditions requiring disclosure.
  5. Maternity plans or possible relocations.
  6. An affordable deductible.

A Nairobi family with one parent working in Dubai and a child studying in the UK may need worldwide cover excluding the US. US cover may be unnecessary; Africa-only cover leaves an obvious gap.

2. Read the geographical area precisely

“Worldwide” is not a complete answer.

Bupa Explorer Africa currently offers Africa Plus, Africa Plus and Europe, Worldwide excluding the US, and Worldwide including the US. Africa Plus also includes specified countries outside Africa, such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Philippines. Other products use different country groupings and eligibility rules. See Bupa’s current Kenya plan information.

Confirm that every country of residence is included, whether planned treatment is permitted there, what emergency cover exists outside the area and what happens if someone relocates.

3. Separate hospital recognition from direct settlement

A hospital appearing in a directory does not automatically guarantee cashless treatment.

Ask:

  1. Is the hospital recognised under this plan?
  2. Can the insurer settle eligible bills directly there?
  3. Does the treatment require pre-authorisation?

Bupa advises members to obtain pre-authorisation for specified treatment and explains that direct settlement is generally easier within its network. A deductible, deposit or non-covered amount may still remain payable. See Bupa’s provider and pre-authorisation guidance.

When admission is required, establish who confirms eligibility, issues the payment guarantee and explains what remains payable.

4. Calculate more than the premium

Compare the annual premium alongside:

  1. The deductible and how it applies.
  2. Coinsurance and copayments.
  3. Benefit limits and sublimits.
  4. Charges above recognised rates.
  5. Currency and payment-frequency costs.

Bupa’s May 2026 Explorer Africa brochure offers deductible choices of zero, USD 200, USD 500 or USD 1,000. A higher deductible may reduce premium, but it increases the amount you must fund before the policy responds. See the current Explorer Africa brochure.

A cheaper plan can be sensible when the deductible is affordable and deliberately accepted. Discovering that cost during a claim is the problem.

5. Compare the final underwriting decision

An initial quotation usually shows standard benefits. The final underwriting terms show what each applicant has actually been offered.

Depending on the medical history, a condition may be accepted, excluded, restricted, covered for an additional premium or referred for further evidence. Bupa states that cover for pre-existing, chronic or hereditary conditions is subject to underwriting. That is neither an automatic acceptance nor an automatic exclusion.

Compare plans only after receiving the written terms for every member. A cheaper quotation excluding the condition most relevant to the applicant is not equivalent to one that accepts it.

6. Read beneath the annual maximum

The headline limit does not reveal every benefit limit. Bupa’s current Explorer Africa brochure illustrates the difference:

Selected benefit Essential Plus Gold
Overall annual maximum USD 1.5 million USD 3 million
Outpatient annual maximum USD 2,000 No separate annual maximum stated
Routine maternity after 10 months USD 2,000 USD 8,000
Newborn care for up to 90 days USD 50,000 USD 100,000
Selected Bupa Global Explorer Africa benefits based on the May 2026 Kenya brochure. Limits and terms can change; confirm the current benefit schedule and full policy wording before purchase.

A family planning maternity may value Gold’s higher limits. Someone focused on major inpatient treatment may decide differently.

Check outpatient care, medication, cancer, chronic conditions, mental health, maternity, newborn, dental and optical benefits individually. The relevant benefit may have a much smaller limit than the policy maximum.

7. Distinguish evacuation from repatriation

Evacuation may take a member to the nearest appropriate facility when suitable treatment is unavailable locally. Repatriation may permit transfer to a country of residence or nationality, subject to medical approval and the wording.

Confirm the trigger, destination, authorisation, transport method, companion benefit and return journey. Medical transfers commonly require advance coordination.

8. Know who performs each role

The name on the quotation may not perform every part of the service.

With Bupa Explorer Africa, Bupa Global Insurance Limited is the insurer and Bupa Global administers the plan. Under the Global Executive Health Plan, Old Mutual General Insurance Kenya Limited underwrites the policy, AXA Global Healthcare provides international administration and EHS acts as the intermediary and first point of contact. See Old Mutual’s GEHP explanation and EHS’s AXA disclosure.

Identify who underwrites, administers claims, issues payment guarantees, coordinates evacuation and handles escalation. Check renewal, relocation and dependant-addition rules too.

What to Check When You Compare IPMI Plans in Kenya

Compare Plan A Plan B Plan C
Area of cover and US inclusion
Premium, currency and deductible
Preferred hospitals and settlement
Final underwriting terms
Key benefit limits
Maternity and newborn terms
Evacuation and repatriation
Insurer, administrator and claims contact
Renewal or relocation rules
Material compromise accepted
Compare the final quotation, benefit schedule and underwriting decision—not brochure headlines alone.

If all quotations cannot be completed on the same grid, they are not ready for a price comparison.

The decision

A lower-premium IPMI plan can be the right choice when its geography fits, the hospitals and claims pathway have been confirmed, the underwriting terms are acceptable and the deductible is affordable.

Before paying more, complete this sentence:

We are paying an additional USD ___ because this plan gives us ___, which we expect to use or could not comfortably fund ourselves.

Choose the compromise you understand and can defend.
