How Much Does Business Insurance Cost in Kenya?

August 17, 2026 BUSINESS INSURANCE

Amssurity business insurance cost in kenya review showing a quotation folder, calculator, payroll schedule and asset inventory for a Kenyan SME.

How much does business insurance cost in Kenya? There is no single market-wide premium. A small firm buying limited cover may be governed by an insurer’s minimum premium, while an SME combining property, WIBA, liability, equipment and business interruption can pay tens or hundreds of thousands of shillings a year.

In the illustrative 12-person Nairobi office example below, the basic premium is KSh219,500 and the total after assumed levies and stamp duty is approximately KSh220,528.

This is a worked scenario, not a Kenyan SME average or insurer quotation. The actual price depends on the activity, payroll or fees, insured values, limits, claims history, controls and excesses.

What determines business insurance cost in Kenya?

Different covers measure different exposures. That is why the business insurance cost in Kenya cannot be calculated using one universal rate.

Common rating bases and cost drivers for business insurance in Kenya
Cover Common rating basis Important cost drivers
Property and burglary Buildings, contents and stock values Occupancy, location and security
Electronic equipment Replacement value Portability, theft exposure and security
Business interruption Insured gross profit Recovery period and operational dependencies
WIBA Employee earnings by occupation Duties, work location and injury exposure
Public liability Activity, turnover or wages, plus limit Customers, products and off-site work
Professional indemnity Profession, gross fees and limit Advice, contracts and claims history
Goods in transit Maximum load and annual carryings Goods, routes, frequency and security

Occupation alone can change the premium. In Pacis Insurance’s published SME schedule, professional indemnity premiums for the same KSh1–2 million fee band and KSh5 million limit are KSh43,736 for accountants, KSh18,121 for architects and KSh29,171 for engineers.

These figures illustrate how activity affects pricing; they are not a live quotation or guarantee of current terms. View the Pacis SME Combined proposal form.

How much does business insurance cost in Kenya for a 12-person SME?

Consider a 12-person management and technology consultancy operating from a rented Nairobi office. It declares:

Declared rating information for the illustrative SME example
Rating information Declared amount
Annual employee earnings KSh12,000,000
Annual turnover and professional fees KSh35,000,000
Furniture and office contents KSh3,000,000
Laptops and electronic equipment KSh4,000,000
Business interruption gross profit KSh10,000,000
Public liability limit KSh10,000,000
Professional indemnity limit KSh5,000,000
Claims history No claims in three years

Assume an insurer reviews the services, employee duties, security, claims record and limits, then produces this illustrative quotation:

Illustrative annual premium by business insurance section
Section Illustrative annual premium
Fire, contents and burglary KSh22,500
Electronic equipment KSh48,000
Business interruption KSh15,000
WIBA KSh54,000
Public liability KSh18,000
Professional indemnity KSh62,000
Basic premium KSh219,500

If percentage-based policyholder levies total 0.45%, they add KSh987.75. Adding KSh40 stamp duty gives KSh220,527.75, or approximately KSh220,528.

These figures explain the calculation. They are not market rates, an insurer tariff or a promise of similar terms. The insurer’s current quotation governs the final premium and charges.

Why two SMEs can pay different premiums

Payroll, turnover and fees

WIBA is commonly rated using annual employee earnings split by occupation. Section 7 of the Work Injury Benefits Act requires every employer to maintain insurance for liabilities under the Act unless exempted. Read the Work Injury Benefits Act.

For declaration and claims checks, see Amssurity’s WIBA insurance in Kenya guide.

Turnover may influence public liability, while professional indemnity may use gross professional fees.

Asset and interruption values

Buildings, contents and equipment should follow the policy’s valuation basis. Stock may be valued at cost or another basis specified in the wording.

If property worth KSh20 million is insured for KSh10 million, only half its value is declared. Subject to the wording and application of average, a KSh4 million partial loss could reduce to about KSh2 million before the excess.

For business interruption, insurance gross profit may differ from accounting gross profit. Complete the insurer’s worksheet and choose a recovery period long enough to restore normal operations.

Limits, excesses and minimum premiums

A larger liability limit can increase the premium. A higher excess may reduce it but leaves the business funding more of each claim.

Insurers may also apply a section or package minimum, or a minimum or deposit premium for adjustable covers.

The meaningful comparison is:

Premium + excess + material uninsured exposure.

How can an SME reduce its insurance cost safely?

Remove genuinely irrelevant sections, classify employees correctly, improve security and safety controls, eliminate duplicated cover, select an affordable excess and compare quotations using equivalent limits.

Never lower the price by understating payroll, turnover or asset values. That moves more of the loss back to the business.

Before requesting quotations, prepare:

  1. Business activities and locations
  2. Asset and peak-stock values
  3. Employee earnings by occupation
  4. Turnover or professional fees
  5. Required limits and contract conditions
  6. Interruption figures, claims history and current schedule

Business insurance FAQs

Quick answers about mandatory cover, SME pricing and why quotations differ.

Is business insurance mandatory in Kenya?

There is no single all-in-one policy every company must buy. Employers must generally maintain WIBA insurance unless exempted.

Other covers may be required by motor insurance law, regulation, a lease, lender, client contract or tender.

How much does business insurance cost in Kenya for a small company?

Company size alone is not enough. An insurer normally needs the activity, covers, payroll, fees or turnover, asset values, limits, locations, claims history and controls.

A limited package may be governed by a minimum premium; broader cover reflects several separately rated exposures.

Why can two insurers quote different prices?

Insurers may apply different rates, appetite, excesses and minimum premiums. Quotations may also use different descriptions, values, limits, extensions or exclusions.

Confirm that both insurers are pricing the same risk before treating the lower total as a saving.

Advisory verdict

The useful answer to how much does business insurance cost in Kenya is not simply the lowest total. It is the cost of insuring the correct activity, people, assets, income and liabilities at limits the business could rely on after a serious claim.
